Client Spotlight: Chill Bill, 73, Barbell Back Squats for the First Time
By Michael Baker · August 21, 2026
At 73, Chill Bill performed his first barbell back squats: two controlled sets of 10 with a 45-pound Olympic bar. Months of air squats, goblet squats, wall sits, mobility work, and steady progression built the strength and confidence to get there.
Today my 73-year-old client, "Chill Bill," did barbell back squats for the first time. We didn’t just throw a 45-pound bar on his back. We have been progressing toward this for many months: • Air squats for sets of 10. (No equipment needed.) • Lots of sets of 10, eventually working up to sets of 20 to 30. Total volume of 80–120 over a 30-minute workout. (No equipment needed.) • Slow, controlled, 5–10 seconds up and down ass-to-grass air squats well below parallel. (No equipment needed.) • Wall sits. (No equipment needed.) • Full-range, ass-to-grass goblet squats with 10- to 20-pound dumbbells. • Weekly yoga-inspired stretching for his hamstrings, hips, and quads. (No equipment needed.) And now this. He squatted a 45-pound Olympic bar for 2 sets of 10 reps with control, balance, planted heels, and slightly more than a 90-degree knee bend. Executed perfectly. The goal wasn’t to force an ass-to-grass barbell squat to satisfy a competitive powerlifting standard or the internet form police. This is excellent depth and more than sufficient for a 73-year-old doing his first barbell back squat. I know 50-, 60-, and 70-something-year-olds who can’t stand up unassisted. This is why strength training focused on compound exercises is king: squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry. These movements build strength that actually matters in your life. Everything else is accessory work or just not that important unless you’re trying to sculpt a bodybuilder physique. This isn’t about lifting weights to impress people. It’s about staying capable. 73 isn’t too old to begin. It’s exactly why you train.
