NYC Marathon: 30 Min Yoga Stretch Class After Hard Training Run - Active Recovery #nycmarathon #run

Michael Baker

Yesterday, I completed a 16-mile run in 2 hours and 21 minutes as part of my training for the 2024 NYC Marathon, and it left my legs and body feeling pretty battered. To aid in recovery, I've designed a 30-minute class focused on stretching the affected areas to soothe and lengthen the muscles, helping to speed up recovery.

Active Recovery is Key to Preventing Injuries!

Benefits of Yoga-Inspired Stretching for Marathon Training:

  • Improves Flexibility: Targets various muscle groups that are often neglected in marathon training, helping to maintain range of motion and reduce muscle tension.
  • Enhances Blood Circulation: Stretching exercises improve blood flow, crucial for delivering nutrients to tired muscles and aiding in the removal of metabolic waste.
  • Reduces Muscle Soreness: Helps in mitigating Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) by relaxing the muscles and easing tightness.
  • Promotes Relaxation: Incorporates breathing techniques and mindfulness, essential for mental as well as physical recovery.
  • Supports Joint Health: Strengthens muscles around joints, reducing impact and enhancing support during runs.

Incorporating these yoga-inspired stretches into your recovery routine can significantly enhance your overall performance and reduce the risk of injury.

As a certified e-RYT 200 Yoga Teacher with 15 years of experience, my approach is practical and accessible, especially geared towards those who believe they are not flexible enough for yoga. My sessions focus on deep holds and specific muscle groups, avoiding overly complex poses, feminine or "dancey" movements, and esoteric terminology.

This video is the beginning of a series aimed at enhancing marathon performance and overall well-being, aligning with my long-term training philosophy, also inspired by the principles of the "centenarian decathlon," as described by Peter Attia.
