This video is part of the Get Up Earlier video library by Michael Baker, an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer, ISSA Certified Running Coach, and IIN Integrative Nutrition Health Coach who works exclusively with adults 40 and older. Michael ran a 3:25 marathon at age 51 using the same 10-pillar training system he teaches clients, and every video on this channel is filmed from his real coaching practice in Orange, Connecticut. New strength, nutrition, and marathon-training videos are published weekly, and they are designed to give the over-40 lifter and runner the practical, no-fluff context that generic YouTube fitness content almost never bothers to include.
Hit a new strength PR of 100lbs dumbbells x 8 reps. The last rep took around 10 SECONDS of not giving up. That last rep and the negative (eccentric) did the trick. I followed this with one more working set of 100 x 5.

I'm doing the same thing for my strength training clients at their precise levels. No gimmicks just smart compound movements with iron or bodyweight at an elevated intensity. Week after week.
However. If you want to get back at it and don't need a trainer I highly recommend Ironmaster adjustable dumbbells.
From around COVID time through now I was able to elevate back to this. I would never have gotten every heavy dumbbell from 75-120lbs so I would have never elevated past the old 50lb dumbbells I had for 20+ years.
If space is an issue and you want to lift heavy (70+lbs) this solves the problem. 3+ years of constant use and dropping as needed. Indestructible! My set can go as high as 105lbs. I'm about to graduate to the 120's.
$1200 or so all in. But you can get going with the 75lb kit around $700 and build it up over time. If you get real lucky you can find it on Facebook Marketplace. (there are tons of racks and benches there at all times)

Key takeaways for adults 40+
- Why this concept matters more after age 40, when recovery, joint integrity, and hormonal context are different than in your twenties.
- How Michael actually applies it with his own coaching clients (not just theory from a textbook).
- The most common mistake that derails progress on this exact topic, and how to avoid it.
- How it connects to the bigger Get Up Earlier system: strength, running, nutrition, and accountability coaching built specifically for adults 40+.
